Elegant and easy-to-make shrimp appetizer bites featuring a zesty cocktail sauce on a crisp base, perfect for entertaining and festive occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • Medium-sized cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • ½ cup (120 ml) tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • A few dashes of hot sauce (optional)
  • Mini toasted baguette slices, buttery crackers, or cucumber rounds for base
  • Lemon wedges for garnish
  • Chopped dill or parsley for garnish
  • Optional: smoked paprika or finely diced celery for extra crunch and color

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange mini baguette slices or crackers on a baking sheet. Toast for 5-7 minutes or until golden and crisp. Remove and let cool.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ketchup, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce if using. Stir well to blend. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Set aside.
  3. If shrimp is frozen, thaw completely and pat dry. If pre-cooked, ensure chilled and ready. Optionally toss shrimp with smoked paprika or black pepper for extra zing.
  4. Spoon about 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of cocktail sauce onto each toasted base. Place one shrimp on top. Garnish with a sprig of dill or parsley and a small lemon wedge or twist.
  5. Arrange the bites neatly on a serving platter. Optionally drizzle extra cocktail sauce on the side or add finely diced celery on top for crunch.

Notes

Do not over-toast bases to avoid hardness. Keep shrimp chilled and sauce slightly thick but adjustable with lemon juice or water. Assemble just before serving to keep bases crisp. Sauce flavors improve if made a few hours ahead. For gluten-free, use rice crackers or cucumber bases. Vegan version possible by substituting shrimp with marinated hearts of palm or artichoke hearts and using vegan mayo in sauce.
