A classic mint julep cocktail enhanced with a rich bourbon simple syrup, offering a refreshing and smooth sip perfect for summer evenings or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1012 fresh mint leaves sprigs, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • Crushed ice as needed
  • Optional: dash of Angostura bitters

Instructions

  1. Make the Bourbon Simple Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup (200 g) sugar and 1 cup (240 ml) water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
  2. Infuse with Bourbon and Mint: While the syrup is still warm, stir in 1/4 cup (60 ml) bourbon and 6-8 fresh mint sprigs. Let it steep for about 20 minutes, then strain out the mint leaves.
  3. Prepare the Glasses: Fill julep cups or glasses with crushed ice to chill them down.
  4. Build the Cocktail: Add 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon and 1 oz (30 ml) of the bourbon simple syrup to each glass. Gently bruise a few fresh mint leaves to release their oils and add them to the glass.
  5. Top with Crushed Ice: Fill the glass the rest of the way with crushed ice and stir gently to combine all the flavors.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Add a sprig of fresh mint on top for garnish. Optionally, add a dash of Angostura bitters for extra depth.

Notes

Make the bourbon simple syrup ahead and store in the fridge up to two weeks. Use crushed ice for best chilling and dilution. Gently bruise mint leaves to avoid bitterness. Adjust syrup sweetness to taste. Reheat syrup gently if crystallized.
