A classic Thanksgiving stuffing recipe with a perfect balance of flavors and textures, featuring buttery bread cubes, savory herbs, and crispy edges.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 cups day-old bread cubes (white bread and hearty sourdough, cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups finely chopped onion (yellow or white)
  • 1 ½ cups diced celery
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth, warmed (low-sodium)
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • 2 tablespoons chopped sage
  • 2 tablespoons chopped thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and let them sit out overnight to dry, or toast them in the oven at 300°F (150°C) for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and celery, cooking until softened and fragrant (about 8 minutes). Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Pour the warmed broth and beaten eggs over the bread mixture. Gently toss to coat, ensuring the bread absorbs the liquid evenly.
  5. Spoon the stuffing into a greased 9×13 baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Let the stuffing cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra parsley if desired.

Notes

[‘Use slightly stale bread for the best texture—it’ll soak up the broth without getting mushy.’, ‘Don’t rush the vegetable sauté step—this is where the flavor develops.’, ‘Adjust the broth amount if your bread is very dry or very fresh.’, ‘If the top of the stuffing is browning too quickly, lightly cover with foil to prevent burning.’, ‘For extra flavor, you can add cooked sausage or chopped nuts to the mix.’]
