Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (312 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • ½ cup (115 g) cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup (30 g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp strawberry jam
  • Optional: ¼ cup (60 ml) peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Mix the Cookie Dough (15 minutes): In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup (226 g) softened unsalted butter and ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar until light and fluffy—about 3-5 minutes using an electric mixer. Add 1 large egg and 2 tsp vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients (5 minutes): In a separate bowl, whisk 2 ½ cups (312 g) all-purpose flour, ½ tsp baking powder, and ¼ tsp salt together. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
  3. Chill the Dough (at least 1 hour): Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least an hour (this step is crucial for easy rolling and crisp cookies). Pro tip: If pressed for time, 30 minutes in the freezer helps too.
  4. Roll and Cut Cookies (15 minutes): Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough to about ¼-inch (6 mm) thickness. Use a 3-inch heart-shaped cutter to cut out shapes and arrange them on parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart.
  5. Bake (10-12 minutes): Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just golden. Watch closely near the end; you want a slight golden tint, not brown. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Prepare the Dips (10 minutes): For the chocolate ganache, heat ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream in a small saucepan until just simmering. Pour over 1 cup (170 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips in a bowl and let sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth. For the cream cheese dip, beat ½ cup (115 g) softened cream cheese with ¼ cup (30 g) powdered sugar and 2 tbsp strawberry jam until smooth and fluffy.
  7. Arrange the Platter (5 minutes): Place the heart-shaped cookies on a large serving platter. Spoon dips into small bowls or ramekins and arrange alongside the cookies for easy sharing. Garnish with fresh berries or edible flowers if desired.

Notes

Chill dough for at least 1 hour to prevent spreading and maintain cookie shape. Use room temperature butter and egg for best creaming results. Roll dough evenly to about ¼-inch thickness for crisp edges and tender centers. Prepare dips while cookies bake and cool. Store cookies in airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days; dips refrigerated up to 5 days. Freeze cookies up to 2 months.
