Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup (65g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (90g) semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • White icing or decorating gel (for football laces)
  • Cocoa powder or melted chocolate (for dipping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Line an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) baking pan with parchment paper, leaving extra over the sides for easy lifting. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter and sugar until smooth and glossy, about 1 minute. Add eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until well combined and slightly pale, about 2 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, folding gently with a spatula until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  6. Remove pan and let brownies cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Lift brownies out using parchment paper. Use a football-shaped cutter or a knife to cut out football shapes. Chill brownies in the fridge for 10 minutes before cutting if needed.
  8. Transfer football brownies to a tray. Pipe white icing or decorating gel in short stripes to mimic football laces. Optionally, dip sides in melted chocolate or sprinkle with cocoa powder.
  9. Arrange on a platter to serve. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.

Notes

For fudgier brownies, use a mix of brown and white sugar. Chill brownies before cutting for cleaner shapes. If icing is runny, add powdered sugar to thicken. For gluten-free, substitute almond flour for all-purpose flour. Double the recipe for parties and use a larger pan. Store decorated brownies separately if freezing.
