Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and butter your baking dish lightly.
  2. Peel, core, and slice your apples. Toss them in a large bowl with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), salt, and lemon juice. Ensure every slice is coated evenly.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fork to mix until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apple filling. Press down gently to ensure it sticks.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. While the crumble is baking, heat the sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts and turns a golden amber color. Add the butter and stir until melted, then slowly whisk in the cream and salt. Let it cool slightly.
  8. Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool for 10–15 minutes. Drizzle the caramel generously over the top before serving.

Notes

[‘Opt for firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for balanced flavor and texture.’, ‘Keep butter cold to create a crisp, flaky topping.’, ‘Allow the crumble to rest before serving to let the flavors meld beautifully.’, ‘If caramel seizes up while adding cream, return it to low heat and whisk until smooth.’]
