Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large ripe banana, mashed (about 120g)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (90g, old-fashioned oats preferred)
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (120g, xylitol-free)
  • 1 large egg (50g)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (30ml, or plain yogurt)
  • 1 tbsp honey (optional, 15ml)
  • 1/4 cup grated carrot or zucchini (optional, 30g)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (optional, 30g; or oat/almond flour for gluten-free)
  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel and mash the banana in a mixing bowl until smooth.
  3. Add peanut butter and applesauce (or yogurt) to the banana; stir until combined.
  4. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
  5. Stir in rolled oats until evenly combined.
  6. Mix in honey, grated carrot or zucchini if using. If dough is too wet, add flour.
  7. Dust work surface with flour. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters or form small balls and flatten.
  9. Place treats 1 inch apart on the baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until edges are golden and treats are firm.
  11. For crunchier treats, turn off oven and leave treats inside with door slightly open for 30 minutes.
  12. Transfer treats to a wire rack and cool completely before serving.
  13. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, refrigerate for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

Use overripe bananas for best flavor and moisture. Always check peanut butter for xylitol. For gluten-free treats, use certified gluten-free oats and oat/almond flour. For crunchier treats, leave in the oven after baking. Treats are human-grade and safe for people to eat. Store in airtight container and freeze extras for up to 3 months.
